Fair value accounting has become essential in evaluating Japanese stocks. Nikkei provides fair value data
based on the 'Pension Fund Association Standards' - guidelines adopted by the Pension Fund Association for measuring fair value of stocks in Japan in order to rate their pension fund assets at a fair value; and on the 'Practical Guidelines for Accounting for Financial Instruments' provided by the Accounting Committee of the Japan Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Japan.
