Katsumi Fujimori
President
Nikkei America, Inc.

I am grateful to you who regularly read The Nikkei. Nikkei has been publishing the international edition of its newspaper in America for 20 years now. Although the media environment is undergoing dramatic changes worldwide, our company is putting renewed effort into providing information via electronic media and, naturally, our print newspapers. Our goal is to continuously strive to be of service to all those who reside in the United States.

The upheaval in the U.S. economy sparked by problems in the subprime mortgage industry is having an enormous impact on the global economy as the result of events such as the failure of Lehman Brothers. New U.S. President Barack Obama has taken office and is largely charting a new course different from that of the George W. Bush administration. In an age such as this when the future is difficult to read, it is the role of newspapers to constantly provide insights into where we are headed, and Nikkei prides itself on always staying a step or two ahead, especially in newspaper journalism.

The Nikkei is a Japanese newspaper, but naturally its articles are not exclusively about Japan. We have numerous reporters stationed across the U.S., including such locations as New York, Washington and Silicon Valley. Along with covering the daily onslaught of events in U.S. politics and economics, our veteran editorial staff writes analytical articles that are easy to grasp. In addition to the U.S., we provide the latest news from Asia and Europe as well through our global newsgathering network.

Besides our family of newspapers, we have prepared for the digital age by updating our Japanese-language news site, NIKKEI NET, as well as our English site, NIKKEI.com, and through the full-scale operation of Nikkei Veritas Market Online, a source of financial and investment information. Combined with NEEDS and Nikkei Telecom 21, we are further enhancing the distribution of stories and data that serve as business news.

Nikkei's information is not limited to economics. As one can see by reading our flagship newspaper, The Nikkei, there is much to be found in print that cannot be read on our free Internet site, such as our well-known "My Personal History" column, much-discussed novels and well-reputed sports columns. Our international edition also features much content from the evening edition in Japan. On the other hand, the online site increasingly offers original content that cannot be read in our print editions. Through print and electronic media together, we strive every day to inform our readers about what is happening when it happens in Japan and the rest of the world. We ask for your continuing patronage as we move forward.
